Graduate Case Study with James Ganguly

Meet James Ganguly, Sales Development Representative at OpenECX

We asked James a few questions about the Furza and OpenECX recruitment and training processes, and how he has found working in fast-paced sales team.

Why were you looking for a career in sales?

In honesty, the potential earnings was one of the most appealing attributes about a career in sales. I just finished my degree and wanted to work in a high-energy, fast-moving environment and the best way for me to achieve that was to look at sales roles.

Can you tell us about the recruitment process at Furza?

With Furza, you apply online and if your CV is appealing to them, you’ll have a telephone interview and then you’re invited to an assessment day. It was really straight-forward and they put me at ease throughout.

How was this different to other jobs you had applied for?

In terms of how they differ to other recruitment companies, it really feels like Furza value you, and recognise your skillset. They went above and beyond to ensure I was placed in a role that was suited to both me and the company. I didn’t feel like just another number on the books.

Can you tell us about the training you received?

In the first month I was based at the Furza offices in Manchester City Centre. We covered all the practical training, giving me a good introduction to what sales, what the job entails, and how to go about solving different issues you may encounter. It was a great experience for me personally as I was completely new to business practices and sales. In months two and three I was in placement at OpenECX, still being supported and trained by Furza who enabled me to get the experience I needed to get my foot in the door.

The training at Furza gave me the chance to do some live calling and put into practice the techniques I’d learned. There was also the chance to socialise and network in the evening with the rest of the graduates so it’s really good fun.

How did it help you perform your role?

For me personally, it gave me all the skills and confidence I needed to perform the role. I doubt I’d as successful in my role now if I hadn’t had the support and training I needed.

What is your favourite part about being an SDR?

The feeling when you get a lead or sign a deal is unbeaten! You put a lot of work in prior, so when it comes to it and you see that the work is being valued it’s a great feeling.

Do you think there are benefits to sales training before taking on a role?

Definitely, before you have even started the job you have been through the Furza Academy training to get to grips with everything you need to know in order to be fully prepared for day one. Everything from business structures, to writing effective emails, GDPR, to making sales calls –  you name it, we covered it. The sales academy really gave me the confidence to walk into my job knowing what I was doing without having to be coached or trained.

What is something you’ve taken away from your experience?

“Always be closing” – a quote from a sales film that I’ve picked up on from being around the sales leaders. It’s a running joke, but something that’s stuck with me and motivates me.
