It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves before an assessment centre. You might catch yourself wondering, “what will the day actually be like?”
Here’s the good news: everyone heading into an assessment centre has the same questions and uncertainties. You’re not alone.
To help you feel calm, confident and prepared, we have broken down 8 of the most frequently asked questions about assessment centres, with clear, practical answers that will set you up for success.
1. When will I find out if I was successful?
This is one of the most common and understandable questions that candidates ask. After putting your preparation and personality into an assessment centre, it is only natural to want clarity on when you will hear back.
At Furza, you will get a response the same day as the assessment. This is because the day has been designed to test key sales skills like communication, resilience and adaptability in real time.
Why you’ll hear back the same day:
- Real-time evaluation: throughout the day, assessors are scoring your performance during group exercises, presentations and interviews.
- Respect for your time: we understand that waiting can be stressful. Providing same day feedback helps you plan your next steps straight away.
2. How many people are going to be at the assessment centre?
Typically, you can expect between 10 and 15 candidates at an assessment centre. This number strikes a good balance, it’s small enough to give everyone the chance to demonstrate their strengths, but large enough to create a dynamic group environment.
That said, the exact number can vary depending on factors like the type of role, location and date of the assessment.
What does the group size mean for you?
- Smaller groups can feel more personal and give you more face-to-face time with assessors.
- Larger groups create a livelier atmosphere and stronger competition, but they offer more opportunities to stand out in group tasks.
3. How many candidates is the business hiring?
Typically, the business we work with will be looking to hire between 2 to 5 candidates from each assessment centre. This number gives the company a good selection of the strongest candidates to fill their roles.
However, the number can vary depending on the company’s current needs. Some businesses have more vacancies available so will need more candidates. In these situations, extra candidates will be selected.
What this means for you:
- At Furza, it is always quality over quantity, so don’t worry about how many roles are available. Even with fewer roles, standout candidates always get noticed.
- If you impress assessors, some businesses may create more opportunities.
4. What is the structure of the day?
An assessment centre is designed to give both you and the employer a clear picture of whether the role is the right fit. Unlike a traditional one-to-one interview, you will take part in a mix of tasks and activities, meeting different people and get a real feel for the company culture.
Here’s how the day is typically structured:
- Candidate arrival: you’ll be welcomed at the assessment centre and checked in. It’s important to arrive promptly.
- Introductions from Furza: the Furza staff will introduce themselves, explain the format of the day and make sure you know what to expect.
- Employer Presentation: you’ll hear directly from your potential employer, get an understanding of the business and who they’re looking for.
- Graduate Introductions: each candidate gets the opportunity to introduce themselves.
- Group tasks and feedback: this is where you’ll work alongside other candidates to solve problems or complete activities.
- Lunch: if this assessment centre is over the afternoon lunch period, food will be provided.
- Candidate presentations: you’ll wrap up the day by delivering a short presentation to the client.
5. Can I use notes when I do my presentation?
Yes, you can definitely use notes during your presentation, just keep them simple. Stick to bullet points or cue cards. These will jog your memory without making it look like you are reading word for word.
Avoid bringing a full script. Reading directly can make you sound over-rehearsed, stiff or disengaged. The assessors want to see your natural personality and communication style.
We would strongly recommend not to use your phone for notes. Even if it feels convenient, it often looks unprofessional. Instead, use cue cards or a neatly organised sheets of paper.
6. What should I wear?
First impressions count. Dress for the job you want!
7. What happens if I don't get the role?
Not every candidate will walk away with an offer and that is completely normal. If you’re unsuccessful on the day, the Furza team will let you know kindly and professionally.
It’s important to note that there isn’t a second chance for the same assessment day, decisions are based on your performance there and then. While that can feel tough the feedback and experience you gain are invaluable. Many candidates say the process helped them feel more confident and better prepared for future opportunities.
8. What happens after the assessment day if I'm successful?
If you secure a role through the assessment day, congratulations. The process moves quickly from there. You will be placed with your new employer and your contract will be sent over for you to review and sign.
Then the exciting and all-important training will start where you will learn the skills and knowledge you need to hit the ground running in your new role.
